MESSAGE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC WHIP

This week, the House passed legislation to fund the government through December 11. While I was disappointed that we came perilously close to a government shutdown – and I was also disappointed that 151 Republicans voted against the measure to keep government open – I hope that House Republican leaders will work with us in the coming weeks to reach an agreement on funding the government for the rest of the fiscal year so that we can avert a shutdown in December. We must replace the ill-conceived and dangerous sequester cuts to both defense and non-defense priorities so that we can adequately invest in our nation’s security and domestic priorities, such as education, research, infrastructure, and job training.

Additionally, I will continue to urge Republicans to work with us to ensure we pay our nation’s bills. The Treasury Department recently announced that the extraordinary measures employed to avoid a default on our debt will be exhausted on November 5. Congress must act before then to provide certainty that America will meet its obligations and avoid the disastrous economic consequences of a default.

At the same time, I also continue to call upon Speaker Boehner and Majority Leader McCarthy to allow a vote to reopenthe Export-Import Bank. Less than three months after Republicans shut down the Bank, American companies have already begun to feel the impact and some have announced that they will be shipping jobs overseas. Without financing assistance that the Export-Import Bank provides, many small, medium, and large-size U.S. businesses are unable to compete on a level playing field in the global marketplace, undermining their ability to create jobs here and expand their businesses. The majority of Congress supports reopening the Export-Import Bank, so it is time for Republican leaders to let the House work its will and have a vote before more U.S. jobs are lost to foreign competitors.

Sincerely yours,
