Message from the Democratic Whip
Today, 290 days after President Trump unnecessarily ended the DACA program, Republican leadership refuses to bring bipartisan legislation to the Floor to protect DREAMers and resolve the crisis created by the Trump Administration’s cruel family separation policy. While I am relieved Republicans’ hard-line, partisan Goodlatte bill failed to pass the House yesterday, Speaker Ryan is still attempting to garner enough votes to pass another anti-immigrant proposal next week that fails to protect DREAMers; wastes $25 billion on President Trump’s ineffective border wall; severely cuts legal immigration; and fails to resolve the family separation crisis. Instead of this bill, we ought to take up the bipartisan USA Act to protect DREAMers and Rep. Jerry Nadler’s Keep Families Together Act to resolve the crisis at the border and reunite families. The House should be allowed to work its will on these issues.
Today also marks the six-month anniversary of the enactment of the GOP tax scam. After six months, the law is lining the pockets of wealthy investors, instead of benefiting workers or growing jobs. Despite Republicans’ promises that everyone would be better off thanks to the law, workers’ wages are falling, small business owners are facing great uncertainty, Americans’ health care costs are going up, and the sustainability of Medicare and Social Security are at risk. This law is a giveaway to the wealthiest in America while everyone else is stuck with the $1.8 trillion bill. I will continue to highlight how the law stacks the deck against working families.
Finally, the Trump Administration took yet another step this week to undermine Americans’ access to affordable, quality health care by allowing insurance companies to sell junk insurance plans to small businesses. This decision will undermine consumer protections for small business owners and their employees, increase premiums for all Americans, and kick 130,000 Americans off coverage. In addition, Republicans unveiled their latest proposal to repeal the Affordable Care Act this week, which would take health coverage away from millions, eliminate protections for those with pre-existing conditions, impose an age tax on older Americans, and threaten Medicare. The American people have been clear that they want Congress to strengthen the ACA – not repeal it. Democrats will continue to stand up in opposition to GOP efforts to sabotage the health care system and hold them accountable for their efforts.
Sincerely yours,

Steny H. Hoyer
