MESSAGE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC WHIP

This week, House Republicans held their fifty-ninth vote to undermine or repeal the Affordable Care Act, despite the fact that the health care law is working as intended to make affordable, quality health care more accessible to Americans across the country. The bills that were on the Floor this week would add billions to the deficit and result in cuts to funds for prevention and public health. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office also released a report this week revealing that if Republicans were successful in their partisan attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act, the deficit would be increased by $353 billion over the next ten years – and $3.5 trillion over the following decade. Instead of wasting time attacking the patient protections and cost savings the Affordable Care Act provides, House Republicans should work with us to tackle the issues that matter most, including supporting job creation and expanding access to economic opportunities that will help more hardworking families secure a place in our middle class.

Republicans can also help support job growth and strengthen our economy by scheduling a vote to reauthorize the Export-Import Bank before the June 30 deadline. It is deeply disappointing that House Republican leaders have ignored the calls from business community leaders, Democrats, and Members of their own party who want Congress to act to reauthorize the Export-Import Bank, which plays a critical role in helping American businesses compete on a level playing field with foreign competitors. Uncertainty surrounding the Bank’s reauthorization is already hurting American businesses, so I will continue to urge House Republican leaders to use the remaining four legislative days to schedule a vote to reauthorize the Bank.

Sincerely yours,
