Saturday, April 29 marks Donald Trump’s 100th day as president. His first 100 days have been defined by chaos, incompetence and broken promises to the American people. From the campaign trail to his time in office, here’s a look at the promises made and promises broken by President Trump:

JOBS

Promise Made

Promise Broken

Trump said he’ll be the “greatest jobs president that God ever created.” [Washington Times, 9/28/16]

Trump has failed to put forward a single jobs bill or infrastructure bill and his budget blueprint would cut investments in job growth, infrastructure, and education.

Trump told manufacturing CEOs in February that “bringing manufacturing back to America, creating high-wage jobs was one of our campaign promises and themes, and it resonated with everybody… I’m delivering on everything that I said.” [Detroit News, 2/23/17]

Trump hasn’t put forward a jobs plan that outlines in any detail how he would bring manufacturing back to the U.S.

Trump promised time and time again on the campaign trail to present a trillion dollar investment in infrastructure, calling the currently airports and roads “third world.”[NY Times,  3/17/17]

Trump has presented no infrastructure plan and the Administration’s budget blueprint cuts the Department of Transportation by 13%.

During his Joint Address to Congress, Trump took credit for jobs announced by Ford, Fiat-Chrysler, General Motors, Sprint, Softbank, Lockheed, Intel, Walmart, and other companies.

Trump was taking credit for jobs that had been in the works for years. President Trump took credit for General Motors jobs created in 2014, and tweeted about Walmart jobs that were announced in October 2016.

NATIONAL SECURITY

Promise Made

Promise Broken

“Beginning on January 20th 2017, safety will be restored.” [NPR, 7/21/17]

Trump’s budget blueprint includes a 29% cut to the State Department and USAID, both of which play a critical role in keeping the U.S. safe. These cuts are opposed by Republicans, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Trump’s dangerous and shortsighted Muslim ban, which has been rejected by federal courts, makes Americans less safe by providing a potent recruiting tool for terror groups like ISIS. National security experts, labor and business leaders, and faith-based organizations oppose the ban.

Trump rhetoric continues to alienateour allies.

During a speech in North Carolina, Trump said his top generals “will have 30 days to submit to the Oval Office a plan for soundly and quickly defeating ISIS. We have no choice.” [NBC News, 4/21/ 2017]

President Trump has not announced a plan to defeat ISIS.

President Trump has no strategy on Syria.  One day Trump officials said Assad can stay, the next day they bomb Syria, and following the bombing, Members of the Trump Administration presented differing policies on Sunday shows about Assad’s future in Syria.

President Trump has no strategy on Iraq.  President Trump sent more troops into harm’s way in Iraq, but has outlined no strategy to achieve victory.

President Trump has no strategy in Somalia and Yemen, where Trump changed the tempo of operations.  Again, no coherent strategy has been submitted to the Senate to explain this build up in troops on the ground.

President Trump’s Administration misled the public about actions he had taken to deter North Korea.

The Trump Administration said, “we are officially putting Iran on notice.” [CNBC, 2/1/17]

President Trump has presented no strategy on Iran.

The Trump Administration says he has “been incredibly tough on Russia.” [Politico, 2/14/17]

The Trump Administration has not imposed sanctions on Putin or his cronies for interfering in the U.S. election.

Russia continues to interfere in Ukraine, but the Trump Administration has not imposed any additional sanctions to deter this behavior.

The Trump Administration has not presented any steps they are going to take to make clear to Putin that he must end his support for Assad.

CYBER SECURITY

Promise Made

Promise Broken

Trump was very clear: “I will appoint a team to give me a plan within 90 days of taking office.” [Politico, 04/20/17]

He blew past that deadline and has failed to put forward a cyber security plan.

HEALTH CARE

Promise Made

Promise Broken

Trump promised “insurance for everybody” that is “much less expensive and much better.” [Washington Post, 1/15/17]

The President and House Republicans put forward TrumpCare, a widely-opposed bill that would kick 24 million Americans off of their coverage, raise premiums, allow discrimination based on pre-existing conditions, and impose an age tax on older Americans.

IMMIGRATION

Promise Made

PromiseBroken

He said he would build a wall that Mexico will pay for: “I would build a great wall, and nobody builds walls better than me, believe me, and I build them very inexpensively. And I will have Mexico pay for that wall.” [Time, 6/16/15]

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto has made it very clear that Mexico will not pay for the wall. For days, President Trump insisted that it should be included in legislation to fund the government – holding up negotiations and risking a government shutdown.

DRAINING THE SWAMP

Promise Made

Promise Broken

Trump tweeted: “I will Make Our Government Honest Again — believe me. But first, I’m going to have to #DrainTheSwamp in DC” [Twitter, 10/18/17]

Trump has not released his tax returns, which would shed light on his business dealings and possible conflicts of interest.

He also refuses to release the White House Visitor Log.

The Trump Administration has publically promoted Trump’s Mar-a-Lago property on government websites.

ENVIRONMENT

Promise Made

Promise Broken

Trump said he would ensure the country has “absolutely crystal clear and clean water” and “beautiful, immaculate air.” [CSPAN, 11/7/16]

Trump signed Executive Orders rolling back the Clean Power Plan and the Clean Water Rule and has proposed a 31% budget cut to the Environmental Protection Agency, zeroing out key clean water programs for the Great Lakes and the Chesapeake Bay.

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY

Promise Made

Promise Broken

Trump insisted that he would be able to get rid of the nation’s more than $19 trillion national debt “over a period of eight years.” [Washington Post, 4/2/16]

Trump is already walking back his promise to balance the budget, saying, “I want a balanced budget eventually… But I want to have a strong military. To me that's much more important than anything.”

Trump is proposing a tax plan that would cut the corporate tax rate to 15%, which would explode the deficit.

PROTECTING LGBT INDIVIDUALS

Promise Made

Promise Broken

Trump proclaimed he would fight for the LGBT community. [Twitter, 6/14/17]

Trump rolled back protections for transgender youth in schools. In addition, President Trump has not denounced the atrocities against LGBT individuals in Chechnya.

The public has taken note and President Trump’s already-low approval ratings have plummeted:

A recent Gallup poll says only 45% of Americans believe President Trump keeps his promises.

  • A Washington Post/ABC poll showed “the new president with the lowest approval rating at this point of any president since the polling began in 1945 — 42% of respondents told pollsters they approved of his performance thus far, while 53% disapproved.”
  • In addition, a NBC/WSJ Poll registered President Trump at 40% job approval, the “lowest job-approval rating for a new president at this 100-day stage in the history of the NBC/WSJ poll.”

There’s a difference between making promises and delivering results for the American people. President Trump has failed to deliver, and Democrats will continue to hold him accountable for his broken promises.
