The President Releases FY 2016 Budget; House Republicans Put National Security at Risk
MESSAGE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC WHIP
This week, the President released his budget for Fiscal Year 2016. I am pleased that his budget makes investments that will accelerate job growth, continue to make our nation more competitive, and help more working families secure a place in the middle class. Since the President took office, deficits have been cut by two-thirds, and the President’s budget will build on this record of fiscal responsibility by reducing the deficit by an additional $1.8 trillion over the next ten years and ending the arbitrary spending cuts imposed by the sequester. Our economy is growing, and the President’s vision will ensure that more Americans are able to share in the benefits of our economic recovery through smart investments in education, job training, infrastructure, and innovation. I look forward to continuing to work with the President and my colleagues in Congress to help Americans gain the financial security they need to provide for themselves and their families.
Unfortunately, House Republicans continue to hold funding for the Department of Homeland Security hostage to their partisan agenda. There is strong bipartisan agreement on a bill to fund the agency, but House Republicans chose to attach unrelated anti-immigration amendments that threaten this must-pass legislation. With only twenty-two days left until DHS funding runs out, I will continue to urge Republicans to stop putting our national security at risk, and bring to the Floor responsible legislation to fund the department, and then work with us to enact bipartisan, comprehensive immigration reform, which is supported by the majority of Americans.
We also learned this week that nearly ten million Americans have signed up for quality, affordable health care coverage for 2015. However, that didn’t stop House Republicans from holding their 56th vote to undermine or repeal the Affordable Care Act this week. Since their last full-repeal vote, the health insurance marketplace has opened, meaning that this with this week's vote, Republicans were voting to take health care away from millions of Americans.
If you haven't already signed up for quality, affordable health care, you have nine days left to explore your options at healthcare.gov and get covered before the February 15 deadline.
Sincerely yours,
