The Leader's Report: Week of March 19, 2007

Today was a landmark day in Democrats' efforts to forge a new direction in Iraq.  The U.S. Troop Readiness, Veterans' Health and Iraq Accountability Act passed early this afternoon, marking the first time Congress has fulfilled its duty and refused to hand the President a blank check to continue his failed policies in Iraq.  By insisting that the President and the Iraqi goverment be held accountable to the President's own benchmarks, we have voted for a real change of course in Iraq.  This legislation will protect our troops and refocus on the fight against al Qaeda and the war on terror.

 

Next week, Democrats will continue our work on behalf of veterans with a vote on the Wounded Warrior Assistance Act of 2007, which will ensure that troops and veterans receive quality care.  Also next week, the House will consider the Democrats' fiscally responsible budget that invests in America's priorities. 

 

Monday, March 19, marked the fouth anniversary of the war in Iraq.  Majority Leader Hoyer spoke on the House Floor to mark this significant date and discuss how the Democrats' Iraq bill will change America's course in Iraq.

 

 

Majority Leader Hoyer and the other House Democratic Leaders issued a statement on the Democrats' fiscal year 2008 budget which invests in America's priorities in a fiscally responsible manner.

 

On Thursday, Majority Leader gave his unequivocal support to full voting rights for DC residents in a speech on the House Floor, calling it unconscionable that residents have been long-denied this right.
