WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released a video message today on open enrollment for plans through the Health Insurance Marketplaces for 2016. “Hi. I’m Steny Hoyer, Democratic Whip in the House of Representatives, with an important message about health insurance coverage for 2016.

“The open enrollment season is now underway.

“Americans who need health insurance or want to explore options for affordable coverage can go online right now to learn more and sign up. It’s easy. Just visit www.healthcare.gov to browse plans.

“You can also check eligibility for tax credits to help save on your monthly premiums, and it is estimated that as many as eight in ten are eligible for these savings.

“The open enrollment period lasts until January 31, but in order to have coverage through the marketplace that starts on the first of the year, you must enroll by December 15.

“Even if you’re already covered through the marketplace, it’s worth it to shop and compare your options, as rates change each year.

“You may find a plan for 2016 that better meets your needs and could save you money.

“You can also use healthcare.gov to check if you or your family members are eligible for coverage under expanded Medicaid.

“Since its enactment in 2010, the Affordable Care Act has reduced the number of Americans who are uninsured to the lowest level in a generation.

“Millions have benefitted from its cost-savings and patient protections.

“Insurance companies can no longer discriminate against you if you have a pre-existing condition or charge a higher premium for a woman than a man.

“Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, those under age twenty-six can be covered under their parent’s plan.

“Additionally, there are no annual or lifetime limits on coverage.

“The Affordable Care Act is working. If you are uninsured or need to renew your coverage through the marketplace, I encourage you to visit www.healthcare.gov right now to explore your options for affordable insurance.

“Again, if you wish to be covered starting on January 1, you must enroll in a plan by December 15. So don’t delay.

“For those who prefer not to sign up online, you can do so by phone at 1-800-318-2596.

“And don’t forget – you can always visit my website, www.democraticwhip.gov, for more information.

“Thanks for watching and don’t delay.”
