“As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month together, let us take this time to reflect on the enormous contributions Latinos have made to our country.

“Throughout our history, Latinos have fought bravely in the military, served with distinction in our government, launched successful businesses, provoked new thinking through the arts, and brought forth innovations in science and technology. As a result of those contributions, America is a stronger, safer, and more prosperous country.

“Since our nation’s earliest days, vibrant and diverse Hispanic Americans and their communities have participated in building a strong democracy in this country and promoting tolerance and opportunity as well. Right now, Latinos in our armed forces are stationed throughout the world and are working to protect and defend those same principles – and I want to thank them, along with all our military personnel, for their service.

“In Congress, I have been proud to work alongside extraordinary leaders and Members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, which continues to promote policies that will grow our middle class, open doors of opportunity, and protect civil rights.

“I have also been fortunate to work with leading Latino civil rights and public service organizations, including Casa de Maryland, MALDEF, National Council of la Raza, and others, to advance these same goals.

“I look forward to continuing to work with these organizations and my colleagues in the Congressional Hispanic Caucus to enact comprehensive immigration reform that unites families and brings immigrants out of the shadows so they can better participate in building a more perfect union.

“I hope this year’s Hispanic Heritage Month will be a time of celebration and pride for millions of Americans, whose cultures and history continue to enhance our national life.”
