Hoyer Video Message Celebrating Immigrant Heritage Month

WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released a video message today in recognition of Immigrant Heritage Month, which is celebrated during the month of June.  Below is a transcript and a link to the video.

“Hi.  I’m Congressman Steny Hoyer from Maryland and Democratic Whip in the House of Representatives.

“I’m also a proud Danish-American.

“My father immigrated to this country in the 1930’s as a young man. He came here for the same reasons so many others did – and still do – to seek a better life in a land of opportunity and freedom.

“During Immigrant Heritage Month, which is observed throughout June, we look back on those who first brought our families here to America, and we celebrate the rich diversity of the American family.

“‘E pluribus unum’ – out of many, one.

“The motto of our country continues to describe one of America’s greatest assets – our immigrant roots. 

“Today, our nation, its ideals, and the opportunities it makes available continue to beckon immigrants to our shores.

“America has always been –  and must continue to be –  a land of opportunity. Immigrants not only benefit from those opportunities but create additional ones through the businesses they launch and the hard work they perform.

“They deserve a chance to build a better life and contribute to a stronger future for America, just as my father and countless other immigrants had. 

“That’s why I’m going to continue working to fix our broken immigration system and keep immigrant families together.

“This Immigrant Heritage Month, let’s remember that all of us may have our roots in different countries and traditions, but we are united by our common faith in the success of this great enterprise we call America.

“Out of many, we are one. And, as one nation, our diversity will continue to be our strength.”
