WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after all House Democrats cosponsored a clean bill funding the Department of Homeland Security, which Republicans have voted against twice:
“There are just two weeks left until the Department of Homeland Security will run out of funding, and it’s time for Republicans to stop playing partisan games with our national security. Rep. Roybal-Allard and Ranking Member Lowey have introduced a stand-alone funding measure at levels agreed to by both Democrats and Republicans, and every House Democrat has cosponsored this bill. It will only take a small number of Republicans to join us in order to pass it and ensure that the Department remains open and has the resources necessary to keep Americans safe and our country secure.
“Twice this week House Republicans have had the opportunity to join us in supporting this stand-alone bill to prevent a shutdown of the Department. However, both times they voted against it. While Democrats are united in passing a clean bill to keep DHS open, Republicans in both the House and Senate continue to be mired in division and are placing our nation’s security at risk. Rather than continue to hold our homeland security agencies hostage to their extreme, anti-immigrant agenda, Republicans ought to govern responsibly and work with Democrats to pass a clean funding bill without delay.”
