WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in recognition of the 26th World AIDS Day:

“Today, as we mark World AIDS Day together, let us remember those we have lost to this terrible disease and reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that those who have tested positive for HIV-AIDS receive the care and support they need to live long and normal lives.  Great advances in treating and preventing the transmission of HIV-AIDS have saved and extended countless lives here in our country and across the world.  But we cannot rest until we find a cure and eradicate HIV-AIDS once and for all.

“I’m proud to support medical research, expanded access to treatments, and prevention education here at home through federal investment as well as overseas through the PEPFAR program, which has helped combat the spread of HIV-AIDS in Africa and other regions by making life-saving medications more readily available to those who need them.  This World AIDS Day, I hope all Americans will take time to learn about how to protect themselves from HIV-AIDS, support organizations seeking new treatments and a cure, and provide assistance to those they know who are living with the disease.  Let us recommit ourselves to this important task with resolve and focus, as we work together to achieve the goal of an AIDS-free generation.”
