WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on Women’s Equality Day, which marks the adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment:

“Today, on Women’s Equality Day, we mark the 96th anniversary of the adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment to the Constitution, and with it, the right for women to vote. We honor the courageous actions of suffragettes such as Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Carrie Chapman Catt, and countless others who fought to secure the right to vote for millions of Americans and taught us that no nation can be truly democratic when half of its voices are shut out.

“As we celebrate Women’s Equality Day, we are reminded of the extraordinary contributions women have made to our country. In the past ninety-six years, women have served in the Armed Services, led some of the largest corporations in the world, and made their voices heard in the halls of government. Yet in spite of those accomplishments, there is still a great deal of work to be done to ensure our nation achieves full equality for all women. Congress must work together to end the gender pay gap, adopt more family-friendly workplace policies, and commit to protecting women’s access to health care services. I am proud to serve with many remarkable women in Congress and I will continue to work with my Democratic colleagues to guarantee equality for all Americans.”
