WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the immigration framework issued by the Trump Administration this evening:

“When President Trump created this crisis for DREAMers by ending the DACA program, he challenged Congress to pass legislation allowing them to stay. But instead of working with both parties in good faith to advance bipartisan proposals that protect DREAMers and strengthen border security, he continues to move the goal posts — now insisting that any deal to prevent DREAMer families from being split apart require that other families be separated instead. That does not reflect America’s values, and it is not good policy.

“Democrats are committed to protecting DREAMers and we believe that our border should be secure, but these young people should not be used as a bargaining chip to harm other families. I urge the President and Congressional Republicans to honor their promise to allow Congress to advance legislation allowing DREAMers to stay here with a pathway to citizenship. With only five legislative days remaining to fund the government and address the issue of DREAMers, the President should not be releasing a framework that is a nonstarter like this one.”
