WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Tax Policy's hearing on the impact of the GOP tax law on small businesses:

“For the second week in a row, Republicans seem to believe that they can rebrand a tax law that advantages the wealthy over the middle class with a Congressional hearing packed with cherry-picked witnesses.  Ways and Means Committee Republicans can try as much as they wish, but they can’t change the facts.  While this hearing is an attempt to claim that small businesses will flourish, every outside analysis shows that the Republican tax law overwhelmingly advantages multinational corporations while ignoring small businesses on Main Streets across America.  As a result of a more-complicated tax code that came out of Republicans’ rush to pass their bill with no hearings or full debate, small businesses are also facing deep uncertainty over how the law applies to them and what its impact will be.

“If House Republicans want to focus the national conversation on an unpopular law that helps big corporations over small businesses, that is their choice.  House Democrats will continue to highlight this Majority’s prioritizing of the wealthiest over those working hard every day to get by, their mismanagement of our nation’s finances, and their lack of an economic strategy to help entrepreneurs create good jobs that sustain our workers in the middle class.”
