WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Administration announced that it has introduced a World Trade Organization (WTO) action challenging China’s provision of illegal export subsidies to a broad range of industries in China:

“Today’s announcement by U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman ought to be welcome news to our nation’s manufacturers and agricultural exporters.  I continue to believe that when American exporters compete on a level playing field, they win. By challenging illegal Chinese export subsidies through the World Trade Organization, the Obama Administration is making clear its determination to protect our businesses and their workers against unfair practices by our overseas competitors.  The Administration’s action is exactly what so many House Democrats have been calling for, and the WTO should act quickly to end these Chinese subsidies, allowing American manufacturers to compete fairly in overseas markets. Doing so will, in turn, enable more workers here at home find and keep good jobs that help them secure a place in our middle class.”
