WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the upcoming departure of long-time Democratic staff director Janice Mays from the House Committee on Ways and Means:
“I join in thanking Janice Mays for her four decades of service to the Ways and Means Committee, to this House, and to our country. I’ve known and worked with Janice for many years, and I have enormous respect for her expertise, her intellect, and her acumen, which have been applied with great effect toward some of the most important tax legislation of our time. Instrumental in the drafting of legislation to extend the life of Social Security in the early 1980’s, the landmark Tax Reform Act of 1986, and the Affordable Care Act in 2010, throughout her career Janice has worked to ensure that our nation’s tax policies are fair and benefit a strong economy for America’s workers and businesses.
"When Janice first came to the Ways and Means Committee in 1975, she was paid less than the men on her team and found herself excluded from social organizations where tax policies were discussed and formed, so over the years she worked to empower women on Capitol Hill by launching networking groups and serving as an advisor and mentor. As she prepares to leave the Ways and Means Committee in May, I wish her all the best in the next phase of her career and thank her for the extraordinary work she has done in service to this House and to our nation.”
