WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the United Nations Security Council enacted an arms embargo in South Sudan:

“I applaud the U.N. Security Council for taking action today to stop the violence in South Sudan.  The arms embargo adopted is a major step toward preventing further escalation and encouraging both sides to negotiate a peaceful solution.  Since achieving independence in 2011, the people of South Sudan have had their future stolen from them by leaders who put their own ambitions over the work of bringing peace, opportunity, and progress to their country.  As someone who has been deeply engaged with the issue of South Sudan’s independence and future, I welcome today’s news and will continue to monitor developments closely as efforts continue to put an end to the civil conflict, address the horrible humanitarian crisis it created, and bring the South Sudanese people the better future they deserve.”
