WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the Trump Administration’s latest attempt to sabotage the Affordable Care Act with the announcement of a rule allowing insurance companies to sell junk insurance plans to small businesses:

“The rule unveiled today, in spite of warnings from patient advocates, health care providers, and insurers alike, is directly intended to undermine our health care system.  This blatant effort to sabotage the Affordable Care Act will undermine consumer protections for millions of small business owners and their employees, increase premiums across the board, and result in 130,000 more uninsured Americans by 2022. It also comes on the heels of the Trump Administration’s dangerous refusal to defend the law in court, in an attempt to gut the law and allow discrimination against 133 million Americans with pre-existing conditions.

“What President Trump and Republicans failed to achieve through legislation they are now attempting to do by executive actions: tear the Affordable Care Act apart, regardless of the consequences to the millions of Americans who benefit from the law.  Democrats will continue to stand up for the Affordable Care Act and its protections.”
