WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) issued the following statement on the immigration principles released by the Trump Administration tonight:
“This proposal is a non-starter. Ours is a nation of immigrants, and choking off the flow of legal immigration would undermine both the moral character of this country and the vital economic benefits immigrants have brought in the form of innovation, entrepreneurship, and hard work.
“Clearly, some in the Trump White House are determined to torpedo any chance of a compromise between Democrats and Republicans in Congress that would allow DREAMers to stay in this country and continue helping to build its future. It is heartless to use DREAMers as bargaining chips; let us not forget that these are our fellow Americans, in mind and spirit, who are part of our communities and love this country they call home. I have met with DREAMers from across the country and continue to be impressed by their patriotism and their innovative spirit. An overwhelming majority of Americans agree we should take action to ensure DREAMers can remain here.
“This White House proposal is not a serious one. Congress should come together to pass the DREAM Act and create a pathway to citizenship for DREAMers. I will continue to work with my colleagues in both parties to foster compromise that prevents immigrant families from being split apart.”
