Hoyer Statement on Trump Administration's Decision to Weaken Fuel Efficiency Standards

WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement this morning on the Environmental Protection Agency's announcement they will weaken automotive fuel efficiency and carbon pollution standards:
“The Trump Administration’s decision to weaken fuel efficiency standards is reckless and will undermine American competitiveness on the global stage. Many automakers and suppliers have already begun their efforts to comply with the previously set standards, and rolling them back now injects uncertainty into the market while ceding American leadership in advanced vehicle technologies to foreign competitors. Working to reduce carbon pollution encourages innovation and leads to the development of technologies that will boost our economy as well as protect our environment; undermining that effort is economically damaging and will force consumers to pay more at the pump.
“This is just the latest in a series of actions by this Administration that will increase pollution and put the health of the American people at risk. We ought to be improving the health of our communities, not making pollution easier.”
