WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the Trump Administration’s decision to end Temporary Protected Status for 2,500 Nicaraguans living in the United States:

“The Trump Administration’s decision to end Temporary Protected Status for Nicaraguans, many of whom have been living in the United States for nearly two decades, is deeply misguided and inhumane. It is yet another attack by the Trump Administration on immigrants, which will tear families apart and instill fear in communities throughout the country. I strongly urge the President to reconsider his decision.

“These immigrants, who went through a vigorous vetting process and are subjected to criminal background checks regularly, are hardworking individuals who are contributing to our economy and strengthening our communities. They are parents to American citizens, homeowners, small business owners, and skilled workers. They should not be torn from their families and forced to return to a nation besieged by violence and instability.

“House Democrats will continue to stand by those with Temporary Protected Status and advocate for a bipartisan, permanent solution to ensure they – as well as DREAMers – can remain here with their families and contribute to our nation’s future.”
