WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the Trump Administration’s decision to end Temporary Protected Status for 57,000 Hondurans living in the United States:
“Once again, the Trump Administration is ignoring humanitarian concerns and common sense as it embraces the most draconian and xenophobic policies of the far right. The Hondurans living here under Temporary Protected Status are refugees, and it would be cruel to force them to return to a country still riven with violence and instability or to retreat into the shadows of this country and live undocumented. These people are law-abiding residents; indeed, they work hard every day and contribute to our economy and give back to their American communities.
“Instead of manufacturing crises that are making our immigration problems worse, the President and Republicans in Congress ought to work with Democrats to enact bipartisan reforms. I will continue to oppose this Administration’s exclusionary and inhumane immigration policies and push for legislation that protects refugees and aligns our immigration system with America’s highest principles, not some people’s basest fears.”
