Hoyer Statement on the Trump Administration’s Decision to Admit Fewer Refugees to the United States
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the memorandum issued by the White House on Friday decreasing the number of refugees admitted to the United States:
“The President’s announcement that his Administration will permit even fewer refugees to resettle in the United States is the wrong decision. He is closing our nation’s door to refugees fleeing war, poverty, and oppression, dimming the beacon of hope that America has always presented to the world. His decision comes with no justification, and it will do nothing to make our nation safer. Instead, it will erode the trust of our allies and present terrorists with a tool for radicalization and recruitment both overseas and here at home. Those seeking refuge should be able to find it on our shores, as millions of our forebears did over the past two centuries, making America stronger, safer, and more prosperous through their contributions. I urge the President to reverse this decision.”
