WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Bureau of Economic Analysis reported its estimate of third-quarter gross domestic product:

“Today’s GDP report reflects the ongoing challenges we are facing due to the spread of the deadly Delta variant of COVID-19 in parts of our country and the uncertainty many businesses are facing.  At the same time, we also learned today that unemployment claims have reached a new low since the start of the pandemic, a sign that we are making steady progress in our recovery.  We must keep moving forward with plans to help businesses, families, and communities get through this crisis and get ahead.  That’s why House Democrats are working hard to build on the American Rescue Plan, which we enacted in March, and which brought our economy out of freefall and has provided much-needed relief to American workers, businesses, and families this year.  It is disheartening that Republicans in Congress did not support this critical legislation and have continually made it more difficult for Democrats to deliver on important recovery programs For the People.  Nevertheless, we are pressing forward with major, transformational legislation to help families and businesses build back better.

“President Biden and Democrats in Congress are working on critical legislation to help families and children, strengthen and expand the Affordable Care Act, and address the climate crisis.  Investing in child care, in particular, will help millions of women return to the workforce.  The Build Back Better Act, coupled with a historic bipartisan infrastructure bill to build up our transportation networks, expand broadband access, and ease the strain on our supply chains, represent a significant investment in the future of our economy and our nation’s economic competitiveness.  House Democrats will not yield in making economic growth and security our priority so that American businesses and working families can emerge from this pandemic stronger, more resilient, and able to get ahead.”
