WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Tax Policy Center issued their analysis of the GOP tax scam conference report:
“Just when we thought the Republican tax bill couldn’t get any worse, changes made to get wavering Republicans back on board have resulted in a bill that will raise taxes on 86 million middle-class households and provide 83% of its tax cuts to the top 1%. According to this latest analysis by the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center, the final version of the Republican tax bill would force 53% of all middle-class households to take a tax hike in order to offset the cost of providing the bulk of tax cuts to the wealthy.
“It’s time for this partisan tax charade to end. The American people strongly oppose this bill and the danger it would present to taxpayers and to our economy. It would raise deficits by an additional $1.5 trillion, plunging our children and grandchildren further into debt and trigger severe, automatic cuts to Medicare and other programs next month. Democrats will continue to stand against this reckless legislation, and it remains to be seen whether Republicans in the House and Senate will have the political courage to do the same.”
