WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the situation in Sudan:

"I am deeply concerned by the news of an apparent military coup in Sudan, which would impede much-needed democratic reforms and which threatens the self-determination of the Sudanese people.  I forcefully condemn any efforts to derail Sudan’s transition to democracy and any actions to crack down on those who are peacefully demonstrating in opposition to this purported coup.

"Having visited Sudan and what is now South Sudan in 2007, I can attest to the deep yearning by the Sudanese people for a prosperous and democratic future for themselves and for their children.  The military’s effort to seize power not only threatens the future of democracy in Sudan but puts at risk the significant investments the international community has already committed to Sudan’s development and its integration into the global economy – investments that cannot proceed without a continued transition toward a democratic government.  Today’s coup is an unacceptable effort to undo the progress that has occurred in the years since the end of the al-Bashir regime.  The military must stand down, release the Prime Minister and other civilians, and commit to non-interference in the democratic process."
