WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the Halt Arms and Promote Peace in South Sudan Act:

"I'm proud to add my name as a cosponsor to H.R. 5996, the bipartisan Halt Arms and Promote Peace in South Sudan Act, which was introduced Monday.  This legislation expresses the sense of Congress that the people of South Sudan deserve the opportunity to build a peaceful future for their young nation.  It also takes steps to prevent the flow of weapons of war into the country, which have fed violence and contributed to the deaths of more than 50,000 South Sudanese and the more than 2 million who have been displaced from their homes.

"I hope the House can take up and pass this bill quickly in order to demonstrate America's support for the fragile cease fire and our solidarity with the people of South Sudan as they work to restore normalcy following the recent conflict.  I thank Ranking Member Engel, Rep. Capuano, and Rep. Rooney for working together to introduce this legislation."
