WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor released its jobs report for September:

"While much of the loss of 40,000 private sector jobs last month can be attributed to the recent hurricanes that devastated parts of Texas, Florida, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico, the end of a record streak of eighty-eight months of private sector job growth clearly shows the fragility of our economy.

"We must take this month’s jobs report as a warning of what may be to come if the Republican Congress and the Trump Administration continue to lurch from crisis to crisis, exacerbating the uncertainty that makes it harder for small and large businesses alike to commit to hiring and long-term expansion. Congress and the Administration also play a central role in providing stability to the economy, and a contraction in private sector employment should be a wakeup call to President Trump and Republicans Members that we should be focused on job creation and ensuring all families have the opportunity to get ahead."
