WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after Senator Bob Corker (R-TN) announced yesterday that he will not run for re-election:

“I join in expressing gratitude to Senator Corker for his years of service to this country and to the people of Tennessee. He and I have worked together well on a number of issues over the years, including legislation to ensure that Congress had oversight over the Iran nuclear deal. He and I both believe, as many of our colleagues do as well, that we cannot simply trust Iran to abide by the agreement but must ensure strict verification.

“Senator Corker has been a pragmatic voice in his party and a champion of smart, strategic foreign policy. In his capacity as Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, he has worked to ensure that senators from both parties have had input on key legislation. I look forward to continuing our work together over the next year, and I wish him and his family all the best in his retirement.”
