WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the GOP tax scam bill passed the Senate Budget Committee on a party line vote:
“Republicans on the Senate Budget Committee have cast their votes for a dangerous and partisan bill that would raise taxes on 82 million middle class families and force our children and grandchildren deeper into debt while giving away the largest tax cuts to the wealthiest in our country. It revives Republicans’ efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act and would kick 13 million Americans off their health insurance coverage. It effectively takes wealth from working families over the next decade and redistributes it to those at the very top, and it will do little to grow our economy.
“If passed by the Senate, it is this deeply flawed bill that House Republicans will be asked to embrace in the days to follow, to the detriment of their constituents. If House and Senate Republicans truly wish to help those ‘struggling to just get by,’ as Speaker Ryan said on the House Floor, this bill is clearly not the way to do it.
“I urge Senate Republicans who still believe in fiscal responsibility, compromise through regular order, and commonsense economics that rewards work and lifts up the middle class to reject this tax bill so we can instead work together on tax reform that helps the middle class and is permanent, bipartisan, and revenue neutral.”
