WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the Supreme Court's decision on the Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission case:
“I am disappointed by today’s Supreme Court decision. However, the Court made clear in its narrow ruling that this individual case sets no precedent and that LGBT Americans have a right not to face discrimination from businesses refusing to serve them equally. This ruling also affirms that states may legislate to protect the civil rights and equality of LGBT people.
“This decision has been a powerful reminder that the work of civil rights and equality in America remains a work in progress. The union our Founders set forth remains imperfect, and it is for us to continue the struggle to make certain that the principles of our Constitution become the practice of our country. I will continue to work with LGBT and civil rights organizations to advance the cause of equality and non-discrimination. The onward march of progress, freedom, and human dignity will not be deterred.”
