WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the Supreme Court's ruling in Husted v. APRI:

“I am very disappointed by today’s ruling in Husted v. APRI.  This decision marks a setback for the cause of voting rights in our country and sends a dangerous signal to Republican-led states that they can disenfranchise voters through purges.  Such purges of voter rolls disproportionately make it harder for minorities and working families to have their voices heard in elections for local, state, and federal offices.

“As the author of the Help America Vote Act in 2002 and a cosponsor of legislation to restore the protections of the Voting Rights Act, I have spent many years trying to ensure that every eligible voter can cast a ballot and have that ballot counted accurately.  Though decisions like today’s frustrate this effort, the work of strengthening and protecting our democracy will continue, and Democrats will keep up this fight for as long as it takes to ensure that every American’s right to vote is secured.”
