WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement this evening after House Republicans announced that the House will vote tomorrow on their TrumpCare bill:

“Tomorrow, the American people will have the opportunity to see where their individual Representatives stand when it comes to protecting access to affordable health care.

“For seven years, Republicans claimed to have a plan to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act – and, a little more than a hundred days ago, President Trump promised that their health care plan would provide ‘insurance for everyone’ that is ‘far less expensive and far better’ than the current system.  Now we are seeing what that plan really is: to kick 24 million Americans off their coverage, make it prohibitively expensive for those with pre-existing conditions to obtain insurance, force states to kick millions off Medicaid and ration care through high-risk pools, raise premiums 24-29% on average each of the first two years, and impose an age tax on older Americans, among other harmful provisions.

“No number of amendments can fix this terrible bill – it is irredeemable.  One in four Americans lives with a pre-existing condition and could effectively become uninsurable under this TrumpCare bill.  Attempts to claim otherwise are dishonest and belie just how unpopular this legislation is, something Republicans already know because many of them heard it firsthand at town halls across the country.  We already know the horrendous effects that Republicans’ TrumpCare bill would have on our health care markets, our economy, and the health of American families.  Tomorrow, we will learn who in Congress is unwilling to stand up against it, under pressure from a President who himself seems not to understand what the TrumpCare bill actually includes.

“The American people will surely hold Republicans accountable for their votes tomorrow on whether to advance this deeply flawed TrumpCare bill or to send a message, once and for all, that making Americans pay more for less, discriminating against those with pre-existing conditions, and kicking millions off their coverage will not happen on their watch.”
