WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on Rosh Hashanah, which begins today at sundown:

“Tonight at sunset, Jewish families across the United States and throughout the world will come together to mark the beginning of the new year.  Rosh Hashanah is an opportunity to give thanks for the blessings of freedom, tolerance, and opportunity that has always been the American ideal – one that has inspired countless Jewish Americans to fight for civil rights and equality and for which so many Jewish members of our Armed Forces have given their lives since our nation’s earliest days.  The history of the Jewish people has been characterized by perseverance in the face of persecution and a determination to make the the world a better place through good works, social justice, and the promotion of peace.

“As candles are lit and the sound of the ancient shofar is heard in communities across America, in Israel, and throughout the world, I join in wishing all who are celebrating a Shana Tova U’Metuka – a sweet and happy new year for 5775.”
