WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on Rosh Hashanah, which begins at sundown on Sunday, September 9:

“On Sunday evening, across America and throughout the world, Jewish families will usher in the start of 5779.  I pray that it will be a year of peace and good tidings, and I extend my best wishes for a ‘Shana Tova U’Metuka’ to all who are celebrating Rosh Hashanah, whether at home with loved ones or in service to our nation abroad.

“The Jewish tradition teaches that the fate of the world rests on a handful of righteous individuals and the good deeds they perform. However, no one can ever know who these individuals are - even the righteous ones themselves.  Therefore, it is for all of us to believe that our own actions may redeem or condemn humanity - that each of us has it in our power to shape the future of our nation and our world.  On this Rosh Hashanah, let us all remember that lesson, no matter our background or faith, and strive to bring righteousness, justice, and truth to all we do.  If we persist in this work, we can make this new year one of renewal and one of hope.”
