Hoyer Statement on Rosh Hashanah
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on Rosh Hashanah, which begins tonight at sundown:
“Tonight, Jewish families across America and around the world will gather to mark the ending of one year and the beginning of the next. Rosh Hashanah is a moment for reflection and renewal, for taking stock of the past and stepping confidently forward into the future. The past year has brought challenges for Israel and the Jewish people that remind us that the demons of antisemitism and bigotry continue to lurk in the shadows of even the freest and most progressive societies. But we have also witnessed the power of compassion, solidarity, and resistance against these evils, which have brought Americans of every faith and background together to defend the principles of tolerance and inclusion that have made our country a beacon of hope and promise.
“As Jewish communities turn the page tonight on 5777 and welcome 5778, I offer my well wishes and my prayers for a year of peace and strength. Not only for the Jewish communities of our nation but for those striving to live in peace and security in the State of Israel and in Jewish communities throughout the world. I extend a special “Shana Tova U’Metuka” greeting as well to the many U.S. servicemembers and diplomats celebrating tonight, who stand in defense of our liberty so that all Americans can live and worship freely. May this new year be one of joy, opportunity, and peace for all.”
