WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after Richard Cordray announced he will step down as Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB):

“For the past five years, the American people have had a strong defender in Richard Cordray, who has tirelessly led the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) since its inception.  Under his leadership, the CFPB built from scratch an organization whose mission is to protect Americans from fraud, and he has led it with great skill and with a commitment to ensuring that hard-working people will not fall prey to scams and predatory financial products.

“Despite Republican efforts to eliminate the CFPB, Director Cordray has never wavered in his conviction that the opportunities essential to the American Dream depend on careful regulation and safeguards so that these opportunities are not unfairly undermined.  I join in thanking him for his work at the CFPB and his years of service to the people of Ohio before that, and I wish him all the best in his next endeavors.”
