WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after Bob Schieffer announced that he will retire from CBS News this summer:
"For half a century, Americans have been tuning in to hear the news from Bob Schieffer, a man we trust and admire for his unshakable commitment to the craft of journalism. Having covered every major beat in Washington, moderated presidential debates, and conducted some of the most hard-hitting interviews in the life of American television news, Bob has not only been history's witness and chronicler but also an important player in shaping opinion and educating voters. He is also the archetype of humility; in spite of so many awards and recognition, he has said that the honor most meaningful to him was the rededication of the journalism school at Texas Christian University - his proud alma mater - as the Bob Schieffer College of Communication because of his desire to help nurture the next generation of American journalists.
"For the past twenty-four years, Bob has held America's leaders accountable by making them Face the Nation. As he prepares to retire this summer, I join in thanking him for serving the nation - in the Air Force, as a reporter, and as a champion of an informed citizenry. I’ve had the privilege of knowing Bob for years and being interviewed by him many times. He is one of the most affable gentlemen in Washington, and I wish him many joyful years spent with family in his retirement.”
