WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement regarding on the announcement that former Senator George Mitchell will resign his post as the Obama Administration’s special Middle East envoy:

"I want to thank Senator Mitchell for his tireless work to advance peace and democracy in the Middle East. A dedicated public servant, Senator Mitchell has served his country with distinction in the Senate, through his work on the peace process in Northern Ireland, and most recently in the Middle East. Over the past two years, Senator Mitchell has embodied our highest ideals of diplomacy, steadfast in his determination to achieve peace in the Middle East and to resolving conflict and promoting democracy across the region.

"We remain committed to peace in the Middle East and to building upon the hard work of Senator Mitchell to achieve this goal. I want to thank him again for his years of service, and wish him well on all that lays ahead."
