WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement in response to the resignation of Michael Flynn as President Trump's National Security Advisor:
“Michael Flynn's resignation must not be the end of the focus on this Administration's concerning ties to Russia and the Putin regime. Congress and the American people must learn the full extent of what President Trump knew about Gen. Flynn's communications with Russian leaders, and when they knew it. We also need to know if promises were made by the Trump campaign and Trump transition team to the Russians regarding sanctions – and what the Trump Administration may be doing to follow through.
“It's already come out that the White House Counsel's office knew about Gen. Flynn's activities for several weeks, and the White House did nothing. Putin's Russia is a place where freedom is stifled in every form, and it is a nation that defines its success by our failures. The American people cannot allow our leaders, especially those charged with maintaining our national security, to be making secret deals with Putin and his cronies. It's time that House and Senate Republicans stopped stalling and finally got serious about launching an independent investigation into the Trump Administration’s connections – and that of his campaign and allies – with Russia, and the hacking of our election.”
