WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after Republicans voted against considering legislation that would create an independent commission to investigate Russian interference in the U.S. election:

“I am deeply disappointed that Republicans refused to vote together with Democrats to bring to the Floor the Protecting Our Democracy Act. This legislation would establish a bipartisan, independent commission to investigate Russia’s interference in the U.S. election so that we can prevent future attacks on our democratic institutions.  This is not a Democratic or Republican issue. Any effort to create distrust in our institutions and undermine our democracy ought to concern every American. It is unfortunate that House Republicans refused to join Democrats today in standing up for America’s democracy.”
