WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today:

“The alleged use of chemical weapons by Sudanese government forces against civilians in Darfur, as reported by Amnesty International, is a heinous and reprehensible violation of international law and human rights.  Once again the world is reminded that Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir has yet to face justice and continues to terrorize the people of Darfur.  My first overseas visit as House Majority Leader in 2007 was to Darfur, in order to demonstrate America’s solidarity with those whose lives had been uprooted by war and genocide.  I continue to call on President al-Bashir to cease all violence against civilians, to guarantee the safety of international aid workers, and to surrender himself to face trial at the International Criminal Court.”
