WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on Rep.Luis V. Gutiérrez’s (IL-04) decision to not seek re-election:

“In the past twenty-five years, I’ve served with many outstanding patriots and public servants, but few have matched the intellect, the passion for service, and the tireless determination of Luis Gutiérrez.

“From his humble roots in a working-class neighborhood of Chicago to his years as a cab driver and and schoolteacher and a city worker, from his campaigns to clean up local politics to his service on behalf of the people of Chicago on the City Council and in the United States Congress, Luis has been a fighter for social and economic justice his entire life. A leading voice within the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, he has stood up on behalf of millions of Latinos and Latinas in our country. He has been a longtime advocate for Puerto Ricans, including in recent years as the island has faced a fiscal crisis followed by devastating hurricanes. Few have moved the needle on immigration reform as Luis has over the course of his career. I’ve been proud to work alongside him in recent years to push for comprehensive immigration reform.

“I am sad to see Luis leave the Congress at the end of this term, but I look forward to continuing our important work together over the next year to protect DREAMers and their loved ones from deportation, expand opportunity for working families, and enable the people of Puerto Rico and other areas affected by the recent storms rebuild stronger and safer. I wish him, his wife Soraida, and their entire family all the best as he prepares to retire after a quarter century of extraordinary service to the people of Illinois’s Fourth District.”
