WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in recognition of Ramadan:

“I join in wishing Muslims in America and across the world a Ramadan Mubarak.  As families gather in prayer and reflection to observe this month and remember the Quran’s revelation, I hope that it will be a time of peace, safety, health, and opportunity.  Over the past two years, the COVID-19 pandemic prevented many from gathering at iftar dinners and from worshipping together.  This year, thanks to the lifesaving vaccines and safety measures, those observing Ramadan can once again do so together with their loved-ones and communities.  That makes this Ramadan even more special, and I hope this spirit of togetherness will lead into a year ahead of joy and plenty.

“I want to thank Muslim Americans for their contributions to our nation and to the work of building a better and stronger America as we emerge from this pandemic together.  That means ensuring that all Americans have access to high-quality health care, safe communities, and economic opportunity.  It also means working to expunge from our society the hatreds that sow division.  In Congress, I will continue working with my colleagues to stand up against Islamophobia, xenophobia, and racism in all its forms, and I was proud to bring to the House Floor, and join in supporting passage of the No BAN Act to reject the previous administration’s immoral and bigoted attempt to prevent Muslims from abroad from visiting our country and their relatives who live here.

“As this season of reflection begins, I wish for a Ramadan in which the blessings of peace, joy, and mutual understanding can take root here in our country in a way that is truly lasting.  Ramadan Mubarak to all who are celebrating here in America and around the world.”
