WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in recognition of the holy month of Ramadan:
"As Muslims in America and around the world begin the observance of Ramadan today, I join in wishing all who participate, Ramadan Mubarak. For Muslims, Ramadan is a time of reflection, of prayer, and of gathering. For their neighbors and fellow citizens, it is an opportunity to learn more about one of the world's great faiths and to acknowledge the many contributions Muslim-Americans have made to this nation.
"Every day, Muslim-Americans put themselves in harm's way wearing the uniform of this country in defense of its values of democracy, freedom of expression, and freedom of worship. They serve our communities as doctors, judges, officers of the peace, small business owners, teachers, and coaches. Mosques in my district and across our country engage in charitable works, feeding the hungry, housing the homeless, and comforting the sick of all faiths.
"At iftar dinners over this Ramadan, conversations will turn, no doubt, to the dangerous and unconstitutional ban that President Trump has sought to impose on Muslim immigrants and refugees. Such a ban runs counter to the core tenets of our country and would endanger the security of Americans of all faiths. Instead of erecting barriers and instituting bans, we ought to reaffirm what truly makes our nation exceptional: our welcoming spirit and our commitment to tolerance. These are the values that attract all immigrants to our shores. Let us embrace these values together as we join in wishing all Muslim-Americans a very meaningful Ramadan."
