WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after President Trump said that Russia should be reinstated as a member of the G-7:
“President Trump should not be rewarding Russia while it continues to flaunt international laws and norms, promote aggression against its neighbors, and attempt to interfere in the free elections of democracies, including our own. To allow Russia into the G-7 would confer a legitimacy it has not earned back after the malfeasance for which it was expelled. The agenda of the upcoming G-7 meeting, ironically, includes a discussion of how to protect democracies from foreign interference – and Russia in particular.
“We must maintain and strengthen the transatlantic alliance and the deep relationships we have forged with those nations that share our values and interests, or else we undermine our national security and risk empowering adversaries like Russia who seek to weaken the United States and the global order we have fought to create and protect for decades.”
