WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement after President Obama signed into law bipartisan legislation that will keep student loan interest rates low:
"The enactment of this bill into law will save students billions of dollars in student loan interest rate payments over the next five years. While I was disappointed at the time it took for Democrats and Republicans to reach agreement on a path forward, and that rates unnecessarily doubled for borrowers during the month of July, I am pleased that Congress was able to reach a compromise. I look forward to continuing to work in a bipartisan way to help expand access to higher education and prepare more Americans for high-skill, high-wage jobs without the burden of higher student loan debt."
