WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today paying tribute to two members of the U.S. Capitol Police force, Detective John Gibson and Officer Jacob Chestnut, who lost their lives in the line of duty 20 years ago today:

“I will never forget the day, twenty years ago, that our nation’s Capitol Building was attacked by a lone gunman, who was stopped only by the courage and sacrifice of the officers of the U.S. Capitol Police.  Two of those brave individuals, Detective John Gibson and Officer Jacob Chestnut, gave their lives to save Members, staff, and visitors that day.  Every time I walk out of my office and pass what is now called Memorial Door in tribute to them, I remember their devotion to service, their love of country, and their heroism.

“I am grateful each day for the U.S. Capitol Police personnel who protect our legislative branch institutions, playing a crucial role in defense of our democracy.  Members could not perform our duties to our constituents without the peace of mind that comes from the safety they provide.  I join in marking this somber anniversary by giving thanks for Detective Gibson and Officer Chestnut and praying for their families and for all who serve in the U.S. Capitol Police.”
