WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement this evening on the passing of lobbbyist Thomas H. Boggs, Jr.:

“Tommy Boggs was a not only a good friend and a Georgetown Law School classmate – he was also someone who believed strongly, as he once said, that ‘the job of government is to help the people.’  The son of two Members of Congress – one a legendary House Majority Leader, the other an extraordinary woman who fought for justice and opportunity in Congress for eighteen years following her husband’s tragic death in 1972 – Tommy and his sisters, Cokie and Barbara, were raised to see public service as a calling that could not be left unanswered.  Tommy answered that call by helping to elect Members of Congress who were committed to expanding opportunities for more Americans, keeping our communities safe, and ensuring that our businesses could compete around the world and grow jobs here at home.

“Tommy will be greatly missed in New Orleans, the city of his proud heritage, and in the Greater Washington area, not only among those who worked with him at the firm he co-founded, Squire Patton Boggs, but throughout the community of those who have striven to make our government more responsive and more effective for those it serves.  My thoughts and prayers today are with his wife, Barbara, his sister and brother-in-law Cokie and Steve Roberts, and the entire extended Boggs family.”
