WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the passing of former Senator Edward Brooke:
"Senator Edward Brooke was a man of principle and political courage. While he is celebrated for being a trailblazer as the first African-American since Reconstruction to serve in the United States Senate - and the first to be re-elected - he was also someone who was unafraid to stand up and speak out on behalf of the most vulnerable Americans. In serving the people of Massachusetts as their Senator and Attorney-General, Edward Brooke fought for justice, opportunity, and an American Dream that was accessible to all.
"I join in mourning his passing and in offering my condolences to his wife Anne and their entire family. Through his service, Senator Brooke enhanced the work of the Congress and helped make our country a place for all its people."
